Creating Team Identity: Branding Your Sports Team Through Uniforms

A team identity is the set of colours, crest and lettering people recognize as yours.

Start with who you are

Before you open a design tool, write down a few words that describe the team. Fast and scrappy? Old-school and proud? Named after a local landmark?

The strongest identities come from something real: your town, your rink, your club's history or a story the players already tell. Generic elements like a random flame or a stock animal make teams look alike.

Pick colours and stick to them

Choose two or three main colours and an accent.

  • Make sure the colours contrast well with each other so numbers stay readable.
  • Check that your home and away looks don't clash with the teams you play most.
  • Write down exact colour values once you've chosen them, so every reorder matches.

Sublimation allows unlimited colours at no extra cost, so you are free to use gradients or detailed patterns. Just keep the core palette consistent.

A crest that works at every size

Your logo has to work as a large chest crest, a small shoulder patch and a social media avatar. Simple shapes and a limited number of colours scale best.

If you plan to order the embroidered finish, keep fine detail to a minimum, since thread can't hold detail the way ink can. Send us your logo as an AI, EPS, PDF or SVG file if you have one. A high-resolution PNG or JPG also works. For images, a transparent background is best.

Lettering that matches the crest

Names and numbers should look like they belong with the crest. Pick one font family for names and numbers and use it everywhere. Readability comes first: a font that matches your logo perfectly is no use if the referee can't read the number.

Keep it consistent across every piece

Write a short set of rules for your team and keep it with your roster:

  • Exact colour values
  • Where the crest goes on jerseys, socks and warm-ups
  • The name and number font, and number sizes
  • Which version of the logo to use on light and dark backgrounds

Your jersey designs are saved in Team Manager, so reorders and new players match the original. The same rules help when you make bags, banners or team social graphics.

Updating an existing look

If your team already has a history, you don't need to start over. Keep the parts people recognize, such as the main colours or the crest shape, and refresh the rest: cleaner lines, a new stripe pattern, updated numbers.

Show players and parents a few mockups before you commit. Feedback on two or three options is easier to get than on a blank page. Your first mockup is free, and every order gets a digital proof before production, with free changes until you approve.

Don't copy a professional team's logo or use a design you don't have the rights to. Do a quick search to make sure your name and crest aren't someone else's trademark.

The same goes for sponsors: you need the sponsor's permission to put their logo on your jerseys, and we may ask for proof.

Quick rule

Write down your exact colours, fonts and logo placement once, and use that sheet for every order.
