Basketball Uniform Regulations: What's Legal for Different Leagues
Basketball leagues regulate uniforms so officials can identify players and keep the game fair. The details vary from league to league and change over time, so use this as a checklist and confirm each point in your league's current rulebook before you order.
Why the rules differ
School associations, college bodies, pro leagues and local recreational leagues each publish their own uniform rules. Competitive and school leagues tend to be strict, with uniform checks before games. Recreational and youth leagues usually care mostly about clear numbers and matching team colours.
Rules are updated regularly, so don't rely on what last year's team wore. Ask your league or association for the current rulebook and read the uniform section before you finalize a design.
Numbers
Numbers matter most because officials use them to report fouls to the scorer's table.
- Many leagues limit which numbers players can wear. Check whether your league restricts certain digits or ranges, or allows 0 and 00 as different numbers.
- Most rulebooks set a minimum number height and require numbers on both the front and back of the jersey.
- Every player on the team needs a different number.
- Keep the font plain and solid. Outlines, shadows and decorative styles can make numbers harder to read, and some leagues restrict them.
Colour and contrast
Numbers must stand out clearly from the jersey colour. Light numbers on a dark jersey or dark numbers on a light jersey are the safe choice. Patterns, gradients or graphics behind the numbers can reduce contrast, so keep the number area clean.
Many leagues expect a light home jersey and a dark away jersey, or the reverse, so the two teams never clash. If your league plays that way, plan two sets.
Undershirts, shorts and accessories
- Undershirts and compression sleeves are often required to be one colour, and to match the jersey or the rest of the team. Mixed colours across a team are a common reason uniforms get flagged.
- Shorts usually need to match the team, and some leagues have rules about length or waistband.
- Headbands, arm sleeves and leg sleeves are often limited to approved colours.
- Shoes need non-marking soles. Some leagues also have rules about sock colour.
If the rulebook is unclear, ask the league before the season rather than at the first game.
Logos and sponsors
School leagues often limit commercial logos and allow only the school name and mark, while recreational and adult leagues are usually more relaxed about sponsors. Size and placement limits are common, so check the rulebook before adding sponsor logos.
With sublimation, sponsor logos, names and numbers are dyed into the fabric and cost nothing extra. Sponsor logos need the sponsor's permission, and we may ask for proof.
